Your Premium Went Up. Now What?

The letter shows up in October. You open it, you find the new number, and you feel something between irritation and resignation. Then, for most people, one of two things happens. Either you accept it because dealing with it feels worse than paying it, or you cancel something in a hurry and hope for the best.

Both of those are decisions made in about four minutes. For something that affects your family’s budget all year, that is not a lot of time.

So before you do either, here is a short, practical way to think about what is actually in front of you.

Your Premium Went Up. Now What?

First, know why it went up

Premium increases are rarely about you specifically. They are usually driven by what the whole pool of people cost last year, what medical care costs generally, and what the plan expects next year to look like. Your own health may not have changed at all.

That matters because a lot of people assume the increase is a judgment. It is not. It also means shopping around is a completely normal thing to do, not a betrayal of anything.

The four things worth comparing

Most comparisons stop at the monthly number, which is the one thing that is easy to find. These four are harder to find and matter more.

  • What you pay before anything kicks in. If there is a deductible, that is money you spend at full price before the plan does anything for you.
  • What a single visit actually costs. Not the category. The visit. If nobody can tell you, that is information too.
  • Whether dental and vision are included or separate. This is the single most common surprise, and it is usually separate.
  • What happens when you need a specialist. This is where the real money lives, and it is where most plans get vague.

The question almost nobody asks

Here is the one that changes people’s thinking: what does it cost me the first time I actually use this?

Everyone compares what they pay every month whether they go or not. Almost nobody models the day they wake up and something is wrong. That is the only scenario that matters, because that is the scenario the whole thing exists for.

If you cannot answer that question about your current option, you are not comparing plans. You are comparing monthly bills.

Discount Health Care Program

Where a membership fits

Sun Health & Dental is not insurance, and we say that first because it matters. We are a discount medical plan. The prices are negotiated with providers ahead of time, and you pay that negotiated price directly to the provider when you go.

That structure is why we can answer the question above with a real number. A first visit to a primary care doctor is $40 at most providers. Going back is $20. A specialist starts at $60, and a follow up is $40. Generic medications are discounted up to 80 percent through our GoodRx partnership at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS and Publix.

Dental is a $12.99 per member add on that covers a free evaluation, radiology and two cleanings a year, plus 25 to 60 percent off other procedures. Vision is $10 per person, with the exam running $35 to $55.

Some people use a membership alongside what they already have, because it fills the gaps that got expensive. Some people use it because what they were quoted this year is simply not workable. Both are legitimate.

One thing that makes this month different

Everywhere else you look right now, there is a deadline. There is not one here. You can join any day of the year. There are no health questions, and nobody is turned away for a condition they already have.

That takes the time pressure out of the decision, which is exactly what a decision like this needs.

Whatever you decide

Decide it with real numbers in front of you. Ask what a visit costs. Ask whether dental is in or out. Ask what a specialist runs. If the answers come back as ranges and disclaimers, that tells you something worth knowing.

And if you want ours in writing, they are above. Call 855-786-0626 if you want to talk it through with a person, in English or Spanish.
