What a Dental Cleaning Should Actually Cost
Try this. Call a dental office and ask what a cleaning costs. Not a range. A number.
Most people who try this get some version of “it depends on what we find.” Which is true, and also completely unhelpful when you are trying to decide whether you can afford to go this month.
It is National Dental Hygiene Month, so let us do the thing nobody does and talk about the actual money.
The real range
What moves the number:
- Whether it is a routine cleaning or a deep cleaning. If there is gum disease, the deep cleaning is a different procedure at a different price, often billed per quadrant of your mouth.
- Whether X rays are included or billed separately. They are frequently separate.
- Whether it is your first visit. New patient exams usually cost more than a return cleaning.
- Where you live. The same cleaning varies meaningfully between cities.
None of that is on a menu anywhere, which is the actual problem.
Why people skip it anyway
Most people who avoid the dentist are not afraid of the dentist. They are avoiding a number they cannot predict.
That is an entirely rational response to an unpredictable price. It is also the single most expensive decision in personal healthcare, because dental problems do not stay the same size. They get bigger, and they get bigger in a direction that costs a lot more money.
A cleaning is cheap and boring. A root canal and a crown are neither.
What changes with a membership
Sun Health & Dental’s Dental Preferred (dental insurance) add on is $12.99 a month per member when you have a health plan. Here is what that includes:
- A free evaluation
- Radiology
- Two cleanings a year
- 25 to 60 percent off other procedures
The last line is the one that matters most if something does turn up. Preventive care is the cheap part. The discount on everything else is what protects you when the cleaning finds something.
If you do not have a health plan with us, dental on its own is $15 per person.
The timing thing worth knowing
Dental Preferred takes 72 business hours to activate after you add it. That is not long, but it matters in October.
December is when everyone remembers they meant to go, and dental offices fill up accordingly. If you want to get in before the end of the year, adding the add on in October rather than late November is the difference between having options and taking whatever appointment is left.
The honest summary
Ours is $12.99. Two cleanings, an evaluation, radiology, and 25 to 60 percent off the rest. That is the whole thing.
Call 855-786-0626 if you want to add it, in English or Spanish.
This plan is NOT insurance. It is a Discount Medical Plan. The plan does not make payments directly to providers. As a plan member you are obligated to pay for all health care services, but you will receive a discount from participating providers. The Discount Medical Plan Organization is Sun Health & Dental LLC, South Florida, 855-786-0626. You have the right to cancel within 30 days for a full refund.
