Know Your Numbers Without the Surprise Bill
Almost none of them mention what it costs, which is precisely why so many people read the advice, agree with it, and then do nothing for four years.
The bill that stops people
Here is the sequence that happens to a lot of people. You do the responsible thing. You go, you get the blood drawn, you feel good about yourself for about a week.
Then a bill arrives for an amount nobody mentioned, from a lab you never chose, for tests you did not know were separate line items.
That experience does not just cost money. It teaches people that being proactive is financially risky, and they stop. Which is exactly backwards, because the cheapest thing that can happen in healthcare is finding something early. The second cheapest is finding nothing.
Which screenings actually earn their place
You do not need everything. For most adults, a short list carries most of the value.
- A lipid panel. This is your cholesterol. It has no symptoms, which is exactly the point of testing for it.
- Blood pressure. Not a lab at all, and it takes two minutes, and most people still do not know theirs.
- Blood glucose or A1C. Catches the long slow drift toward diabetes while it is still reversible.
- A basic metabolic panel. Kidney and liver function, electrolytes. The general health picture.
- A complete blood count. Anemia, infection, a lot of quiet things.
Your doctor may add to this based on your history and family history, and they should. But that short list is where most people should start, and it is unglamorous on purpose.
How to not get surprised
First, ask before the draw which tests are being ordered and whether they are billed separately. Not after. The person at the desk usually knows, and if they do not, ask who does.
Second, find out where the sample is going. Labs are frequently a different company from the office you are sitting in, which is how you end up with a bill from a name you do not recognize.
What we offer
Sun Health & Dental’s base plan includes discounts on labs. Our Quest Select upgrade goes further.
Quest Select is an additional $14.99 a month for an individual, $24.99 for a couple, and $39.99 for a family. It covers your labs, with one exception worth stating plainly: molecular and genetic studies are not included.
It activates 7 business days after you enroll, so it is not a same week thing. Plan for that if you already have an appointment booked.
The point of all this
So here is the missing part. Find out the price before you go. If your current situation cannot tell you, that is worth knowing too.
